A Human-Centered Framework for AI Competence in Higher Education
. This framework defines how students can develop the competencies required to engage with generative AI in a reflective, ethical, and effective manner. It positions AI not as a replacement for human capabilities, but as a tool that augments learning, thinking, and problem-solving.
At its core, the model integrates five guiding principles—self-efficacy, critical reflection, interdisciplinarity, sustainability of learning, and a clear tool perspective—ensuring that competence development remains grounded in human agency and responsibility.
The framework is structured around ten operational competencies, ranging from analytical and communicative skills to ethical reasoning, creativity, and technical understanding. These are complemented by an eleventh, overarching dimension: agency competence, which safeguards human autonomy, judgment, and accountability in AI-supported contexts.
Rather than prescribing behaviour, the framework provides orientation. It emphasises continuous learning, conscious decision-making, and the ability to balance efficiency gains from AI with the preservation of independent thinking.
